Creature

In 2018 I was asked to produce a work for the exhibition Orly & Holubice (Eagles & Doves) at Kunsthalle Bratislava, Slovakia. The exhibition reflected on what influence various symbols exert upon national identity. I had never worked with these topics, but previously I had extensively studied the evolution of animal depictions. It was a natural conclusion for me to look at the heraldic eagle as a human made creature. It had a distinct stylized ornamental morphology that was influenced by its purpose as a coat of arms and national symbol. Over the course of time it was copied, reinvented and redeveloped, generating countless versions of itself, a relic of the shit history of nationalism, repeating over and over for millennia.
Creature is a 21 second video loop in which over 200 silhouettes of heraldic eagles appear in rapid succession. A raw impression of movement and mutation is generated by the variations of the eagles' body shapes.
