The Mazu

In July 2025 my brother Thomas Westphal and I were invited to join Imagining Godzilla, an experimental platform for short term, semi-residential art-research projects onboard the sailing catamaran Godzilla, on its way along the Baltic coast. We brought with us an experimental plankton net we called the Mazu, after the famous sea deity whom we encountered in Taiwan the year before. The Mazu is composed of a series of daisy chained chambers made of gaze of decreasing mesh size. Debris, particles and life forms that don't fit through the specific mesh size of a chamber are filtered into a sample jar, the remaining water flows into the next chamber and so on. The shape and anatomy of the Mazu is reminiscent of a translucent filter-feeding deep sea worm that is able to digest and process sea water. We collected samples in the swampy harbor area of Pennemünde, Germany, by towing the Mazu behind a rowing dinghy. We then extracted the samples from each chamber and viewed them under a microscope during our journey on the Godzilla. Footage of the samples will follow in the near future.
